Romeo and Juliet Act 2 Scene 1
In this scene, it seems that they have already met, and Romeo is simply announcing his love to Juliet. Juliet is aroused, she does not know how Romeo got into the house, and she does not seem to know what is going on. Romeo insists that love guided him into the house, and to her balcony. Juliet seems interested, but she grieves the fact that Romeo is a Montague.
This scene angers me because the two families have hated each other so much, that their children are afraid of telling their family the truth about their love. If the families would have been open to change, the story probably would not have ended in such a sad way. I am shocked by the way these two families hate each other.
Shakespeare obviously believes in astronomy, because he mentions the moon and the sun very much and he even analogizes with Jupiter. “But wait, what's that light in the window over there? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Rise up, beautiful sun, and kill the jealous moon. The moon is already sick and pale with grief because you, Juliet, her maid, are more beautiful than she.” I do not understand these analogies very well, yet Romeo seems to be comparing Juliet with the sun. Juliet insists that if Romeo promises to love her, he will even change her name. She also states that she does not hate Romeo; her only enemy is his name.
Juliet also persists that Romeo would be killed if he is caught; however, Romeo is stupidly blinded and does not seem to care. “If they see you, they'll murder you.” Juliet states but Romeo simply replies “Alas, one angry look from you would be worse than twenty of your relatives with swords. Just look at me kindly, and I'm invincible against their hatred.” (Translation) Romeo definitely has faith that things will work out. Juliet definitely loves him at this point; however, she is very frightened of what might come out of this. She seems to be scared, because she repeatedly states the dangers of the case, and the hatred between their families.
